Glenallachie 18
Today we will be looking at the Glenallachie 18 year old.
Prior to 2017, when the distillery was acquired by a consortium led by master distiller Billy Walker, GlenAllachie was rarely seen as a single malt whisky. The much anticipated core range of the GlenAllachie distillery from Speyside was finally launched in July 2018. This 18 Year expression features whisky matured in Pedro Ximénez sherry, oloroso sherry and American oak casks.
The distillery say that this 18 year old expression "exemplifies the signature style of The Glenallachie, a combination of rich and robust spirit", matured in a combination Pedro Ximinez, Oloroso and American oak casks, it has been bottled at 46% ABV, it is naturally coloured, non-chill-filtered.
Nose is light and sugary sweet. Vanilla and toffee are the dominant notes. Hints of citrus fruits. Apple cinnamon. Touch of water cools of the pure sugar sweetness and brings out more Apple notes.
Palate kicks of with light sherry notes, dried fruits dominate with a slight spice. Sugar sweetness from the nose is still there but more mixed with the fruit notes. Touch of water brings out nuttiness as well as removing the spice.
Finish is medium long. Fruit and nut chocolate bar with oak tannin tickle in your throat.
A fun and lively 18 year old. Manages to be delicate and rich at the the same time.
